Numnuts blocks the acute pain that follows tail docking and castration of lambs with rubber rings. It’s an easy to use ring applicator, combined with an injector that dispenses NumOcaine local anaesthetic. Read our factsheet for the science on NumOcaine.
Validated by CSIRO, Numnuts provides lambs with the best start in life and helps sheep farmers achieve industry best practice by adopting an ethical, sustainable approach to castration and de-tailing.

Validated by CSIRO, Numnuts provides lambs the best start in life, giving welfare focused sheep farmers an ethical, sustainable approach to castration and de-tailing.
Worldwide, more than 100 million lambs are castrated and tail docked each year without pain relief. Numnuts’ patented technology is a practical, farmer-friendly method for alleviating the pain suffered when lambs go through these husbandry procedures.
NumOcaine (Numnuts pain relief) is injected at the same time as ring application to the tail or testes, providing targeted pain relief that kicks in almost immediately.
Numnuts was launched in Australia in 2019, after 10 years of research & development, via an international collaboration between welfare scientists at CSRIO and Moredun in combination with product design engineers 4c Design. Numnuts has been available in New Zealand since 2021 and is now available in the UK.
Numnuts is entirely unique. No other device exists that allows farmers to provide targeted pain relief to lambs during tail docking and castration.
Since its launch, Numnuts has been used by hundreds of pioneering sheep farmers and vets, with over 3 million doses of NumOcaine administered so far.
